Barcelona launches 25 new green spaces across all its districts this year
Barcelona is rolling out 25 new green space projects throughout all its districts. The initiative aims to bring nature closer to neighbourhoods and transform urban areas into more liveable environments.
The plan forms part of the Programa d’Espais de Proximitat i Interiors and will be presented this Friday in the Saló de Cròniques at City Hall. The mayor, together with the Urban Planning department, will set out how these measures will be distributed and what impact they will have on the city. The projects focus on recovering underused spaces and turning them into accessible green areas. The proposal combines sustainability, environmental improvement and the creation of new neighbourhood meeting points, with interventions designed to adapt to each neighbourhood. Before the official presentation, the technical and urban-planning aspects that will define these transformations will be explained. The aim is to move towards a city better prepared for climate challenges and with a better-connected network of local spaces.
Beyond urban design, the change is felt in everyday life: more shade, less heat, spaces to stop, play or simply be. This type of action redefines how the neighbourhood is lived and reinforces the idea of a city designed for daily life, not only for moving quickly.
In the coming months, the locations and implementation timetable will be specified. The challenge will be to integrate these new spaces into urban life and keep them in active use as part of Barcelona’s everyday landscape.
