Barcelona promotes Museo Carmen Thyssen in historic Palau Marcet

The project will turn the former Cinema Comèdia into the Carmen Thyssen Barcelona Museum, limiting commercial uses to guarantee its artistic character. The planned restaurant will operate only as an internal service for visitors, with no direct access from the street.

The intervention includes the comprehensive restoration of the building, with protection for its façades and original elements. This will be joined by an extension at the rear to create exhibition rooms, an auditorium, educational spaces and a large entrance atrium. Work will also be carried out on the corner chamfer to improve integration with the urban surroundings.

The plan seeks to consolidate Passeig de Gràcia as a cultural axis, combining heritage and new uses. The transformation will make it possible to recover a historic building and open it to the public with a stable and flexible exhibition offering.

This project strengthens the city's cultural offering and has a direct impact on the city centre, attracting visitors and generating activity in the surrounding area. For residents and the cultural sector, it means adding a new artistic benchmark and revitalising an emblematic space. Final approval will depend on the municipal plenary session and the Generalitat. If the procedures are completed, Barcelona will gain a new museum at one of its busiest points, reinforcing its role as a cultural destination.
