The Canòdrom sports centre moves forward after years of waiting
Barcelona takes a key step in one of the neighbourhood's long-standing demands. The City Council has commissioned the project for the future Canòdrom sports centre, a facility long awaited in Congrés i els Indians.
The project comes after years of demands from local residents and marks the start of a transformation that will affect the neighbourhood's everyday life. The new sports hall is expected to open in 2031, although construction is expected to begin during the next municipal term.
The facility will meet a clear need: indoor sports spaces. Until now, many young people have trained outdoors, which limits activity at certain times of year.
The urban planning change approved in 2015 made it possible to reserve this plot for facilities. Since then, pressure from local residents has been constant for the project to become a reality.
The future sports centre will not only address a lack of sporting facilities. It is also conceived as a meeting point that will invigorate the social fabric and strengthen community activity in the area.
The area around the Canòdrom, next to the Meridiana, thus adds a new chapter to its transformation. From a space linked to its industrial and recreational past to a facility for everyday use, the neighbourhood is moving towards a configuration more centred on its residents and their needs.
