L8 will connect Plaça Espanya and Gràcia with three new stops
Mobility in Barcelona is taking a decisive step forward with the extension of the Generalitat de Catalunya Railways’ L8. The Generalitat de Catalunya has approved a loan of up to 300 million euros to drive a project that will connect Plaça Espanya with Gràcia.
The new infrastructure envisages a 4.1-kilometre underground route and the creation of three stations: Hospital Clínic, Francesc Macià and Gràcia. In addition, the existing stations will be remodelled to improve connections with other lines and make travel easier in one of the busiest areas of the city.
The project is already under way. The tunnel-boring machine's components are being moved to the launch shaft on Gran Vía, next to Plaça Espanya, and drilling is expected to begin this summer. The total investment exceeds 400 million euros, making the work one of the most significant in recent metropolitan transport.
Funding is structured through a loan requested from the European Investment Bank, with a term of up to 30 years. This formula will make it possible to cover both construction and the technical studies needed to complete the extension.
The extension of the L8 is set to transform the axis between Eixample and Gràcia, reducing journey times and easing congestion on other lines. In a city where mobility is key to everyday life, the project reinforces the commitment to more efficient and sustainable public transport.
