El Besòs i el Maresme faces the largest housing renovation in its history
Barcelona is preparing for one of the largest urban renovation projects in recent years. The neighbourhood of El Besòs i el Maresme will receive a historic investment to renovate around 4,000 homes and transform an area that has suffered for decades from deterioration and lack of maintenance.
The plan will be promoted jointly by Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat de Catalunya, which will create a specific company to manage the works over the next ten years.
The intervention will affect around 200 buildings and promises visible changes in the daily lives of thousands of residents. Structural improvements, energy efficiency, accessibility and renewal of communal spaces form part of a transformation that seeks to modernise one of Sant Martí’s most vulnerable neighbourhoods.
The operation will mobilise more than €400 million between the two administrations. The aim is not only to refurbish flats: it also seeks to restore the social fabric, improve the urban environment and reduce years of inequality compared with other areas of Barcelona.
El Besòs i el Maresme has historical problems linked to rapid construction in the 1960s and decades of little public investment. Many buildings today have structural deficiencies and urgent modernisation needs.
Barcelona is thus once again focusing on housing and the regeneration of peripheral neighbourhoods. The transformation of Besòs will shape the future of one of the city’s areas with the greatest urban and social challenges over the next decade.
