Green light for the renewal of Fira Montjuïc: more housing, green areas and facilities
Barcelona City Council has approved a major renewal of Fira de Barcelona Montjuïc including affordable housing, new facilities and more green space. The project will transform the area in the coming years and change the connection between neighbourhoods such as Poble-sec and Font de la Guatlla.
The plan provides for the construction of 548 homes, 500 of which will be affordable rental homes, as well as new services such as a CAP, a sports centre and the expansion of educational facilities. New squares and pedestrian routes will also be opened, adding thousands of square metres of public space.
One of the key objectives is to integrate the exhibition grounds into the city. To this end, avenida Reina Maria Cristina will be redeveloped with priority given to pedestrians, and the pavilions will be reorganised according to sustainability and heritage-protection criteria.
Among the new features is a new multifunctional venue designed by architect Smiljan Radić, which will include a large landscaped walkway open to the city. The Pavelló del Vestit will also be transformed through a project by the Bjarke Ingels Group studio together with MIAS Arquitectura.
The cultural sphere will also be strengthened by the expansion of the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the conversion of historic spaces into a major conference centre, expanding Montjuïc’s role as a cultural and economic hub.
Beyond the figures, the project redefines how this part of Barcelona is experienced. Opening Fira Montjuïc to its surroundings seeks to leave behind a closed model in favour of a space that is more accessible, green and connected to everyday life, where housing, culture and economic activity coexist along the same urban axis.
