Barcelona launches the new Ideal Flor: library, auditorium and park to transform La Prosperitat

Barcelona City Council is taking a key step to transform the Ideal Plástica Flor factory into a major cultural space. The project includes a library, auditorium and green areas. The initial budget exceeds 37 million euros. The work will renew the heart of La Prosperitat.

The transformation of the former Ideal Plástica Flor factory is already becoming a reality for the residents of La Prosperitat. Barcelona City Council has begun the process of turning this emblematic site into a major cultural and social facility, by tendering for health and safety coordination services for the future library and other spaces.

The contract, valued at 137,335 euros, will ensure technical supervision during the execution of the works, including monitoring of the asbestos removal plan if necessary. It also provides for the coordination of the business activities involved in construction, an essential step in moving forward with the rehabilitation of the site.

The new library, conceived as an open-plan and light-filled space over two floors, aims to become an architectural and cultural landmark for the district, following the model of the award-winning Gabriel García Márquez library. The 6,500-square-metre building will also house an auditorium, a gym and different spaces for neighbourhood use, expanding the range of public services in the area.

The project also provides for the creation of a tree-lined square and children’s play areas, together with 3,000 square metres of green space that will revitalise the surroundings. The total budget for the intervention amounts to 37.5 million euros, of which 24.84 million are already allocated in the current Municipal Investment Plan. The remaining funding is expected from 2027 onwards.

For more than twenty years, the Ideal Plástica Flor factory remained dismantled, waiting for a new life. Now, its conversion into a cultural and social hub marks a milestone for the neighbourhood and for Barcelona, which continues to commit to recovering disused industrial spaces and putting them at the service of the public.

For decades, the Ideal Plástica Flor factory was a symbol of industrial activity in Nou Barris. Its closure left a void in the neighbourhood’s urban and social fabric, but it also opened the door to new opportunities. The recovery of this space responds to a long-standing demand from residents and forms part of Barcelona’s trend of transforming former factory sites into leading public facilities, strengthening the identity and cohesion of neighbourhoods.
