New call in Barcelona: funding and real-world trials to innovate in housing until 5 June
Barcelona has launched a call that could directly influence how housing is accessed and lived in across the city. Barcelona City Council is seeking innovative projects that provide real solutions to one of today's biggest urban problems, with applications open until 5 June.
The initiative, promoted by Fundació BIT Habitat, focuses on ideas that improve sustainability, accessibility and management of the housing stock. It is not just theory: the selected projects will be tested in real settings across the city.
The challenge is open to a broad range of participants. Start-ups and SMEs, as well as universities, cooperatives and research centres, can take part. The call is looking for proposals that are applicable, scalable and capable of generating an impact in the short term.
The call has a budget of 500,000 euros. Each project may receive up to 80,000 euros, covering a large part of the costs. In addition, finalists will have the opportunity to develop their ideas and validate them on the ground.
The move responds to an increasingly visible problem. Access to housing remains under strain and makes it necessary to explore new approaches, from industrialised construction to the use of data to manage resources better.
Barcelona is thus opting to open the process to innovation. When solutions are tested in the city itself, their impact ceases to be theoretical and begins to transform the way people live, build and access housing.
