Barcelona launches a new healthcare and university district on the Diagonal

A consortium led by the Generalitat will transform 70 hectares on the Diagonal. The new Clínic will open in 2035 and change the local urban landscape. The campus will integrate healthcare, university facilities and mobility. Discover how this project is redefining Barcelona.

Barcelona is preparing for a large-scale urban transformation: the Generalitat, together with the city councils of Barcelona, L’Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues, the Universidad de Barcelona and Hospital Clínic, has formed a consortium to develop a new healthcare and university campus on the Diagonal. The project, which envisages the opening of the new Hospital Clínic in 2035, will create a 70-hectare neighbourhood that will change the city's urban development model.

The future campus will affect three municipalities and maintain a presence in the district of l’Eixample. Among its first steps, the consortium has acquired almost 300,000 m² of land to build the complex, which will include the UB's new Faculty of Pharmacy. The estimated total investment amounts to 1.7 billion euros.

The timetable sets the start of key works for the second half of 2028, when site development work and the extension of metro line 3 will begin. A new stop is planned beside the campus, providing easier access to both the hospital and university facilities, as well as nearby neighbourhoods, particularly in L’Hospitalet.

The design of the complex will be determined through an international architectural competition, brought forward by six months to coincide with UNESCO's designation of Barcelona as World Capital of Architecture. This competition will establish the technical and urban planning foundations of the project and allow the implementation timetable to be adjusted.

The scale of the investment, coordination between public authorities and dependence on transport infrastructure make the new Clínic campus one of the most ambitious urban development projects in Catalan public healthcare. The challenge will be to maintain the pace until 2035 and turn the announced vision into reality.
