The Port de Barcelona is building a new car terminal that will affect employment and logistics
Barcelona is taking a key step in its logistics strategy with the construction of a new vehicle terminal at the Port. The infrastructure, which will be ready in 2028, will increase capacity for cars arriving and departing and could translate into more jobs and economic activity in the city.
Located at Moll Príncep d'Espanya, the terminal will be able to handle up to 180,000 vehicles a year and store thousands of units simultaneously. The aim is to absorb traffic growth, especially cars arriving from Asia, and strengthen the port’s role as a gateway to southern Europe.
The project, promoted by International Car Operators (ICO), includes an investment of 75 million euros and a long-term concession. The facility will incorporate digital solutions to monitor every vehicle in real time and automate processes, speeding up operations and reducing times.
The connection with rail, road and maritime transport will be one of its strengths. This intermodality will facilitate the rapid movement of cars to other parts of Spain and Europe, creating new opportunities for logistics companies and associated services.
In addition, the terminal will be adapted to the growth of the electric car, with charging points and systems designed to optimise space and internal flows. It will also make it possible to operate with different types of transport, including mega-trucks.
For the city, this type of infrastructure does not only affect the port. It has a direct impact on employment, the activity of local companies and the daily movement of goods, reinforcing Barcelona’s role as one of the Mediterranean’s major logistics hubs.
