Barcelona begins the countdown to 700 years of Monestir de Pedralbes

Mayor Collboni leads the Honorary Committee for the 7th centenary. The Monestir de Pedralbes is preparing a cultural programme through to 2027. Key figures from the city and the Generalitat are taking part. Discover how this historic anniversary will be celebrated.

Barcelona is preparing to commemorate 700 years of the Monestir de Pedralbes. Mayor Jaume Collboni has chaired the first meeting of the Honorary Committee, responsible for coordinating the centenary events. The cultural programme will run from March 2026 to May 2027.

At the meeting, Collboni was accompanied by Mª Eugènia Gay, deputy mayor, the councillor for the Les Corts district and Xavier Marcé, head of Culture and vice-president of the Committee. Joaquim Nadal, co-vice-president, and Anna Castellano, director of the Museu Monestir de Pedralbes, also took part. The committee includes representatives of the community of Poor Clare nuns, neighbourhood organisations in Les Corts and members of the Consell Assessor del Monestir.

The anniversary recalls the foundation of the monastery in March 1326 by Queen Elisenda de Montcada i de Pinós. Barcelona City Council, through the ICUB, and the Generalitat de Catalunya, which has declared 2026 the centenary year, are joining forces to give prominence to the occasion.

The Honorary Committee will support all the planned cultural events, seeking to ensure they have social impact and reach the whole city. Celebrations will begin in March 2026, commemorating the laying of the first stone of the apse, and will culminate in May 2027, recalling the consecration of the church and the arrival of the first community of Poor Clares.

The main programme has been designed by the museum in collaboration with the ICUB, but the Committee may propose new initiatives that enrich the commemoration, always adapting to the available objectives and resources. The atmosphere at the meeting was one of enthusiasm and commitment to Pedralbes’s history.
