The new Ronda de Dalt cover starts to take shape
The transformation of Ronda de Dalt enters one of its most visible phases with the installation of the first pieces of the new cover. The section between Vallcarca and the area around IES Vall d’Hebron is thus beginning to gain the structure that will make it possible to create more than 16,000 square metres of public space.
The operation includes the placement of 101 large prefabricated pieces. Before 6 August, 56 are scheduled to be installed, each more than 12 metres long and 2.4 metres wide.
The work requires the use of a high-capacity crane and the occupation of part of the side carriageway. In the Besòs direction, traffic is diverted and both directions are temporarily concentrated on the mountain side of the Vall d’Hebron promenade.
Night-time closures between exits 5, Vall d’Hebron, and 6, Vallcarca, also remain in place. The restrictions apply from Monday to Thursday to reduce the impact during the busiest traffic hours.
Between 3 and 24 August, the slow lane in both directions of the central trunk road will also be occupied. During that period, installation of the cover will continue, along with work related to wiring, ventilation, lighting and the safety systems of the future tunnel.
The new structure will cover around 340 metres of the ronda and will continue the section already transformed between the Mercat de la Vall d’Hebron and the institute. In total, the intervention will make it possible to link together around 540 metres of space recovered above the road.
Works began in June 2024 with the construction of the central wall and emergency exits. The forecast is for the covering and installations to continue until 2027, while the final design of the urban space that will occupy the upper part is defined.
The change will particularly affect Sant Genís dels Agudells and la Teixonera, two neighbourhoods separated for decades by traffic on the ronda. The work already leaves a clear image of the transformation: large concrete pieces gradually closing a road that will end up becoming a new pedestrian and green corridor.
