Barcelona erects a block of 40 public homes in just 10 days using modular construction
Barcelona takes a firm step towards innovation and sustainability with the construction of a new block of 40 public homes on Carrilet Avenue (Sants-Montjuïc). Thanks to the installation of 48 prefabricated three-dimensional modules fitted out in the factory, the building's main structure was erected in just 10 days.
The project, designed by the UTE Vivas Arquitectos Barcelona, Judith Crespo Rueda and Oihana Garcia Acin, and carried out by Constructora del Cardoner and Constructora d’Aro (CompactHabit), represents an investment of 6.7 million euros. The modules, already fitted out with kitchens, bathrooms, windows and services, halve the usual timescales, allowing the homes to be delivered at the end of 2026.
The building, with a ground floor plus nine storeys, will include municipal facilities, multi-purpose rooms and shared spaces such as a dining room, kitchen, laundry and terrace. The rented flats include terraces of 9 m² — 23 m² in the corner homes — and will be distributed from the second to the ninth floor.
According to Jordi Valls, deputy mayor, this model demonstrates the City Council’s and IMHAB’s commitment to being a driver of innovation and productivity in the construction sector. Industrialisation not only shortens timescales, but improves workplace safety, reduces waste and emissions, and reduces dependence on weather factors.
