Barcelona builds a pioneering reserve for animals in transition at the Zoo
Barcelona Zoo has begun construction of a new reserve that redefines the concept of animal welfare in urban environments.
This space, conceived as a temporary refuge for animals during works or renovations at their usual facilities, will occupy the site of the former Aquarama, in the very heart of the zoo.
Far from being a simple transit space, the future reserve will function as a small Noah's Ark: 3,500 square metres designed according to criteria of comfort, naturalisation and specific adaptation to each species. It will have five outdoor areas, three climate-controlled indoor areas and two aviaries, prepared to house everything from mammals to reptiles, birds and amphibians. The facilities will also include rest areas and technical areas for the care staff.
The investment, which exceeds 1.9 million euros, reflects a firm commitment to move towards a more ethical, flexible zoo model centred on conservation. The works, which will be completed in spring 2026, will take place without interfering with the day-to-day running of the rest of the park or with the animals' welfare.
This reserve forms part of the transformation process at Zoo de Barcelona, which is committed to management that is more respectful of biodiversity and to the public's environmental education.
