Barcelona Nord reopens refurbished and changes the experience of coach travel
Travelling by coach from Barcelona Nord will no longer be exactly the same. The station has reopened fully refurbished after a €14 million renovation aimed at better organising flows, improving the waiting experience and adapting the building to coach travel, which has grown strongly in recent years.
The change is noticeable from the entrance. The station now concentrates its main services on a single floor and establishes a single passenger entrance from Carrer de Nàpols. The idea is simple: someone arriving with luggage, a ticket on their phone or little time before departure should not have to get lost among unclear routes.
The new lobby, of around 1,500 square metres, gains space, light and more comfortable waiting areas. The ticket offices, information points, toilets, signage and large-format digital screens for checking departures and arrivals have also been renewed, without having to look too hard.
The refurbishment comes at a key moment. Since 2019, the number of passengers at the station has grown by almost 50%, and forecasts indicate that demand will continue to rise until 2030. Barcelona Nord is not just a station for occasional journeys: it serves as a gateway in and out for national, international, interurban and tourist routes.
Security and control of the space have also been reinforced. The platforms and common areas have new surveillance systems, and the interior layout seeks to better separate the movements of those waiting, buying tickets, arriving from Arc de Triomf or heading directly to the coach.
The building also retains its heritage importance. The refurbishment has recovered historic elements, including the Helios mosaic and the lunar phases by Armand Olivè Milian, a piece that once again takes centre stage inside a more modern station still linked to its railway past.
Sustainability also enters this new stage. The installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof will make it possible to cover part of the facility’s energy consumption, while improvements to lighting, finishes and comfort seek to make a wait that can last quite a long time on many journeys more pleasant.
Barcelona Nord had needed updating for years. For frequent travellers, the change is not only that the station looks better, but that it is easier to use: to enter, find one’s bearings, wait, check the platform and head to Arc de Triomf or the centre without a sense of chaos. In a city where not everything travels by train or plane, the coach also calls for its place in everyday mobility.
