Barcelona loses places in the world's most liveable cities ranking, according to the EIU
Barcelona remains one of the best cities to live in, but this year it falls three places in the prestigious Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index.
In the 2025 edition, the Catalan capital ranks 38th with an overall score of 82.8 out of 100, compared with 35th place and the 91.4 points it obtained the previous year.
The EIU analyses 173 cities around the world each year, assessing factors such as stability, healthcare, education, culture, the environment and infrastructure. In this setting, Barcelona stands out particularly in education (91.7) and infrastructure (96.4), but loses ground in healthcare, where it reaches only 66.7 points.
Although it remains in the top 40, this slight fall reflects a more critical perception of certain aspects of everyday life in the city.
In the global ranking, Copenhagen has taken Vienna's crown as the world's most liveable city, followed by Zurich, Melbourne and Geneva. Europe dominates the top 10 with four cities, while Australia contributes three. Despite everything, Barcelona retains its international appeal, though there is room for improvement.
