New initiatives promote daily bicycle use in Barcelona

The event, organised by the Área Metropolitana de Barcelona, has presented the BICIMPULS awards to initiatives that bring cycling into new settings. They include community projects, secure parking solutions and routes connecting neighbourhoods.

The gala, held at the Universitat de Barcelona, also focused on infrastructure. The Pont d’Esplugues, key to linking different cycle routes, is establishing itself as one of the most significant projects of recent years.

The growth of the Bicivia network is setting the pace of this change. With more than two thirds already completed, the aim is to connect municipalities and make journeys between towns safer.

Beyond the award-winning projects, the challenge remains to integrate cycling into everyday life. Connections to workplaces, industrial estates and major avenues will be key to establishing its daily use.

Public involvement has also been recognised. Regular users of services such as Bicing and AMBici reflect how mobility is changing from the ground up, driven by increasingly sustainable habits.

Barcelona is moving towards a model in which cycling ceases to be an occasional alternative and becomes a central part of getting around. The challenge now is to ensure that this transformation reaches every corner of the city.
