Barcelona Metropolitan Area will ban B-label cars in 2028 and expand the Low Emission Zone
Mobility in Barcelona is entering a new phase. Barcelona Metropolitan Area has begun the process to ban the circulation of B-label vehicles from 2028, a measure that will directly affect thousands of drivers.
The change forms part of the new metropolitan plan seeking to reduce emissions and transform the way people move around the city. Until now, cars with a yellow sticker could circulate in the Low Emission Zone (ZBE), but the regulations are being tightened to speed up the transition.
The strategy is not limited to the capital. Municipalities such as Sant Andreu de la Barca and Martorell will have to adapt to the new rules, within a broader objective: for the 36 municipalities of the metropolitan area to review their mobility model.
The timetable points to a clear horizon. Between now and 2030, combustion engines will gradually lose ground in favour of cleaner alternatives. The impact will be felt in air quality, but also in the day-to-day lives of those who depend on cars to get around.
The measure has received broad political support in the metropolitan council, though not without debate. The tightening of the ZBE once again puts mobility at the centre of the urban agenda.
