Barcelona tests eco-friendly paving slabs on Gran Via to transform its pavements

Barcelona has begun a new phase in its commitment to urban sustainability by installing innovative paving slabs on Gran Via, between Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla Catalunya. The pilot project seeks to test the durability and functionality of this paving in one of the city’s busiest areas.

The new slabs retain Barcelona’s iconic design, but are made from more environmentally friendly materials. According to the City Council, these pieces are not only more durable, but also improve permeability, making rainwater drainage easier.

Before reaching the heart of Barcelona, this type of paving had already been tested in the Poblenou neighbourhood. There, the slabs showed notable resistance to everyday wear, encouraging the authorities to extend the trial to an area with greater pedestrian flow.

With this initiative, the city aims to move towards a more sustainable public space, adapted to today’s environmental challenges. The result of the Gran Via trial will be key in deciding whether this paving-slab model is implemented in other areas of Barcelona.
