The commercial icon of Portal de l’Àngel returns: this is how the street will change with new shops and offices

The operation, promoted by Redevco Iberian Ventures, combines large retail premises on the lower floors with offices on the upper floors. The objective is clear: to reactivate the building and increase the flow of activity on one of the city's busiest streets.

The impact on the shopping experience will be direct. Three large retail spaces of around 2,000 m² each will host new brands, two of them already confirmed although still unnamed. This anticipates a change in the offering and in the type of public that frequents the area.

The project has been slow to start. More than a year and a half of procedures have delayed an operation exceeding €200 million between purchase and refurbishment. The owner ruled out uses such as a hotel or luxury housing in order to speed up the launch and focus on retail.

The building, known as Casa Jorba, has significant symbolic weight. It represents more than 20% of the street's retail floor area, so its reopening will have an immediate effect on the dynamism of the surrounding area.

Portal de l’Àngel thus reinforces its position as one of Barcelona's key axes. When a space of this size becomes active again, it does not only change a façade: it changes the flow of people, consumption and the commercial pulse of the whole area.

UPD: The project already has a new administrative advance: Barcelona City Council has given the green light to the licence for the building's rehabilitation works. The refurbishment will turn the historic Can Jorba property into a mixed-use space, with three large retail units and 17 offices, while TK Maxx and Uniqlo appear as two of the future operators set to occupy part of the building.
