Barcelona reactivates its ornamental fountains after the water alert ends
Thanks to rain in recent weeks, Agència Catalana de l’Aigua has deactivated the Hydrological Alert in Conca del Ter-Llobregat, allowing Barcelona City Council to lift water-use restrictions, although the city remains on pre-alert.
With this measure, the city is beginning to reactivate its 330 ornamental fountains, which had been switched off since November 2022. The process, divided into three phases through to 2026, will start with the smaller fountains and culminate in the reactivation of iconic sites such as the Font Màgica de Montjuïc, which is currently being modernised with LED technology and improvements to its sound system.
Irrigation of parks and gardens with groundwater is also resuming, a key element of the strategy to save drinking water. The green recovery plan includes planting 9,000 trees and more than 8 hectares of vegetation by 2026.
These measures form part of the Pla Clima de Barcelona, a roadmap towards a more resilient and sustainable city, with planned investment of up to 1.8 billion euros by 2030.
