Travessera de Gràcia reopens a run-down space as an accessible playground with new vegetation

Reopening confirmed (29 Mar 2026): Barcelona City Council transforms degraded plot at Travessera de Gràcia 253 (Vila de Gràcia) (former dog area) into a children's playground between party walls: 4 play features (spring horse/seesaw/cabin with ramp-slide/robinia-log climbing); water fountain; renewed vegetation; full accessibility. The reopening of a children's playground at number 253 Travessera de Gràcia marks a before and after for families and residents in the area. What for years was a degraded space between party walls has been transformed into a place designed for play and coexistence, restoring vitality to one of Gràcia's busiest arteries.

Barcelona City Council has chosen to equip the area with new play elements, adding four children's play features and a water fountain that invite people to stay and enjoy themselves. The intervention has also renewed the vegetation, providing shade and freshness, and improved accessibility so that all boys and girls can enter without barriers.

The remodelling responds to a historic demand from the neighbourhood, which saw the space lose use and appeal over time. Now the area is becoming a renewed meeting point, designed to strengthen community life and connection with the immediate surroundings.

Laia Bonet, first deputy mayor and councillor for Gràcia, has highlighted that the work makes it possible to recover a small but essential corner for the neighbourhood, strengthening urban integration and quality of life in the district.

The Jardins de Jaume Planas i Alemany, also undergoing renovation, show the municipal commitment to revitalising public spaces in neighbourhoods such as El Carmel, where improved accessibility and green surroundings are key to residents' wellbeing.

Barcelona's children's playgrounds fulfil a social function that goes far beyond play.
