Barcelona adds 11 new surveillance cameras to Barceloneta this summer

Barcelona City Council will install 11 video surveillance cameras on Barceloneta's seafront promenade before summer. The measure seeks to strengthen safety in one of the city's busiest areas and the one with the greatest number of incidents.
The new cameras will cover the stretch between Plaça del Mar and Trelawny street, covering around 2,450 square metres. They will be placed on existing lampposts, distributed along the entire promenade, to guarantee continuous surveillance both by day and by night.
The main focus will be the area around nightclubs and restaurants, where most night-time incidents are concentrated. One of the cameras, located near Trelawny street, will provide specific coverage for this leisure area. All images will be monitored in real time from the Guardia Urbana control centre, which will also be able to access stored recordings for subsequent investigations.
Barcelona currently has 160 public-safety cameras in districts such as Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc and Sant Andreu. The municipal plan envisages installing 500 devices before 2027, with the aim of reaching 660 operational cameras in the next two years. The first phase is already under way with the installation of 14 cameras in Plaça Catalunya, which will enter operation in the first quarter of 2026.
The following phases will add 366 more cameras in locations that do not yet have this system, extending surveillance to every district, including the six that still have no cameras. The municipal government says the locations have already been defined and that installation will be completed between 2026 and 2027.
Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced that the goal is to reach 1,000 public-safety cameras, with 500 planned for this term of office and another 500 for the next. Although the second phase has not yet been formally requested, the council has already studied the locations. Barcelona's first security camera was installed in 2001 in Plaça George Orwell, in the Gòtic, and the most recent ones are those in Plaça Catalunya.
