Barcelona's school dining halls change: less noise, more inclusion and learning

Transformation begins with the environment. Noise, one of the main long-standing problems, is being reduced through the installation of more than 300 acoustic panels and the renovation of ceilings in several schools. The change is immediately noticeable: dining rooms go from chaotic spaces to much calmer and more pleasant environments.

Pupils' day-to-day experience is also changing. Metal trays and plastic tableware are disappearing in favour of household plates and glasses, bringing the dining room closer to a more familiar setting. In addition, self-service queues are giving way to round tables where children serve one another, fostering autonomy and social skills.

The improvements have already been introduced in 11 schools and will continue this summer in another 12. The plan, promoted by the Barcelona Education Consortium, provides for extending them to all public schools over the coming years, with an investment of more than two million euros.

The change goes beyond the physical. Coordination between monitors and teaching staff reinforces the educational value of lunchtime, preventing it from being a mere break in learning. In addition, increased staffing — with a notable rise in supervision hours — makes it possible to tailor care to each pupil, especially in inclusive-education settings.

The initiative reflects a clear evolution in the city's educational model: integrating every moment of the school day into the learning process. Barcelona is thus moving towards a school where wellbeing, coexistence and inclusion form part of everyday learning.
