The Cathedral and the Palau pay tribute to Montserrat Torrent in Barcelona
Barcelona celebrates Montserrat Torrent’s centenary with a week of events that place organ music at the centre of the cultural agenda. Concerts, exhibitions and tributes spread across different venues turn the city into a meeting point for followers and the curious.
The first major event will take place on 15 April at Barcelona Cathedral, with a special concert as part of the organ series. Admission will be free until capacity is reached, and the performance will be given by her pupil Susana García Lastra.
On 17 April, coinciding with the exact anniversary date, the Museu de la Música de Barcelona opens the exhibition Montserrat Torrent. A punt d'orgue, which can be visited until October. The exhibition traces the career of a key figure in the renewal of the organ in Spain.
A day later, the Palau de la Música Catalana hosts an organ marathon featuring around twenty performers. The event will bring together pupils and musicians from different countries, in a venue especially connected to Torrent’s career.
The celebration extends beyond the city. The Any Montserrat Torrent programme includes nearly fifty concerts in different parts of Spain and Europe, with the artist herself taking part in some of them.
There will be free concerts and cultural activities accessible without leaving the city centre. Venues such as the Cathedral and the Palau will host special programming. It is also an opportunity to discover the organ live, something unusual. During these days, classical music takes centre stage in the city.
The centenary strengthens the presence of organ music on Barcelona’s cultural calendar.
