8M 2025 in Barcelona: the Assemblea 8M march sets off at 11:30 towards Arc de Triomf

On 8 March Barcelona will see two separate feminist demonstrations. The city faces alarming figures for gender violence. The Ayuntamiento is preparing institutional events and awards. The debate over the trans law continues to shape the movement.

This Sunday 8 March, Barcelona will once again be the epicentre of feminist demands, with two main marches crossing the city separately. The fracture in the unified bloc, which began last year, is being consolidated in a context marked by the rise in sexist violence and the proliferation of attacks through digital networks. The urgency of the protest is felt in the streets: so far this year, a woman is murdered every five days in Spain.

The Assemblea 8M is calling its demonstration for 11:30 from the Jardinets de Gràcia. The route will go down Passeig de Gràcia, cross Ronda de Sant Pere and reach Plaça Catalunya, ending at the Arc de Triomf with a closing event on Passeig de Lluís Companys. This group focuses its demands on the feminisation of poverty and the care crisis, under the slogan “Ni un paso atrás”. They call for universal public services and protection for freely chosen motherhood, as well as denouncing the advance of the far right and global racism.

Meanwhile, the Moviment Feminista de Barcelona will begin its protest at 12:00 at Plaça Catalunya. Its manifesto focuses on the exploitation of bodies and labour, and on fighting all forms of sexist violence. The division between the two groups arose after the debate on the inclusion of trans women in the demands, but both are calling for mass mobilisation to curb the rise in sexual assaults and employment discrimination that persists in 2026.

During both marches, the organisations will provide information on resources and emergency telephone numbers for victims of gender violence. The city will be coloured violet on a day that seeks to make visible the injustices affecting half the population and to stop discourse that threatens women's fundamental rights.

The Ayuntamiento de Barcelona is also joining the commemoration with the reading of an institutional manifesto on 6 March at 9:00 in Sant Jaume Square. A banner bearing the slogan “Trenquemos els estereotips” will be displayed on the municipal balcony. In addition, the city celebrates the 40th edition of the Premio 8 de Marzo – Maria Aurèlia Capmany, endowed with 15,000 euros for projects that combat gender stereotypes. The award ceremony will take place on 9 March at 17:30 in the Saló de Cent.

As a new feature, the “Converses feministes” series will travel through different spaces in Barcelona over the coming months, opening debates on equality in science, culture and politics.

The Premio Maria Aurèlia Capmany, created in 1987, has become a benchmark for promoting projects that advance gender equality in Barcelona. Each year, it recognises innovative initiatives that seek to transform the city's social and cultural reality, contributing to the eradication of stereotypes and making visible the work of groups committed to women's rights. The presentation of the award in the historic Saló de Cent reinforces its symbolic value and its impact on the local feminist agenda.
