Barcelona fills with pride, music and football this weekend
Barcelona faces one of those weekends that change the city’s rhythm. Pride Barcelona concentrates its major events, the Poble-sec neighbourhood festival fills the streets with community life, several festivals add outdoor music and the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina promises to turn Sunday into a night of collective celebration.
Pride will be one of the main highlights. The main Pride programme takes place from 15 to 18 July, with stages at Plaça Universitat and Passeig Lluís Companys, free concerts, DJ sets, drag shows, queer culture and an agenda designed to combine activism and celebration.
One of the most eagerly awaited moments will arrive on Saturday: the Pride Barcelona demonstration. The march will once again bring thousands of people onto the streets in defence of LGTBIQ+ rights, in a context in which the celebration coexists with a political message that is increasingly necessary in the face of hate speech.
Music will play a central role throughout the weekend. Clean Bandit, Julieta, María Peláe, Beth, Kate Ryan, Las Ketchup and other names are part of a programme that turns Pride into one of Barcelona’s major popular summer events.
The city, however, will not be limited to Pride. Poble-sec celebrates its Festa Major with street parades, concerts, rumba, popular culture and nights in the square. The neighbourhood thus recovers that community pulse which turns every street into a small stage shared by residents and visitors.
Electronic music will also have its place with the Soundit Festival, which brings to Parc Nou del Prat a programme focused on sound and artists such as Nina Kraviz, 2manydjs, John Talabot or Honey Dijon. It is an alternative for those looking for a festival without going too far from Barcelona.
In Nou Barris, the Desvarío festival adds another layer to the agenda with flamenco within the Grec programme. The proposal mixes tradition, risk and new readings of the genre, with concerts and dance in a district gaining prominence as a summer cultural venue.
On Sunday, football will take over emotionally with the World Cup final between España y Argentina, scheduled for 21:00. Bars, terraces, squares and screens will share the tension of a night that could be historic for the national team and will add the atmosphere of a major sporting occasion to the end of the weekend.
The weekend leaves a very recognisable image of Barcelona: a city capable of bringing together pride, neighbourhood, music, flamenco, electronic music, popular culture and football within a few kilometres. The key will be to choose a route, allow plenty of time to get around and be swept along by an agenda that turns July into a diverse, activist and deeply urban celebration.
