Barcelona fills with free theatre, dance and concerts at 34 venues this spring

Barcelona is preparing for an unprecedented cultural spring: the ESCENA circuit, in its 19th edition, will bring more than 170 free theatre, dance, circus and concert performances to 34 venues spread across every district of the city, from 6 February to 26 April. The programme includes performances open to the public and special sessions for primary and secondary schools.

This year’s line-up brings together prominent circus names such as Pepa Plana, Jordi Panareda and Manolo Alcántara, alongside musicians such as Lola Stouthamer, Lalo López, Mar Pujol and Abraham Lojo. In theatre and dance, companies such as Fantàstica Meravellosa, Temple de Vesta, Laia Santanach, L’Esbord and El Desvío promise to surprise attendees.

ESCENA is part of the Barcelona Districte Cultural project, promoted by the ICUB, which connects civic centres through four major circuits: Escena (performing arts and live music), Argumenta (thought), Pantalla (cinema) and Temporals (visual arts).

The spring edition begins on 6 February with five simultaneous performances in different neighbourhoods: three concerts and two theatre productions in civic centres in the municipal network. All performances are free to attend with prior reservation, and the season will run until 26 April, with 145 open performances and 33 school sessions.

This year, the circuit joins the Cap Butaca Buida initiative, which seeks to turn Catalonia into the world capital of the performing arts, by taking part in the great Diada del Teatre on 21 March.

Dance will play a leading role with six proposals within Dansa Metropolitana, from 5 to 22 March, with local and international companies performing in several municipalities in the metropolitan area.

The theatre offering ranges from autofiction and documentary theatre to puppets, dance and physical comedy, designed for all audiences. Circus, one of the highlights, combines humour, poetry and acrobatics with established artists and new proposals.

For families, ESCENA offers free theatre, dance and concert performances, as well as complementary activities such as workshops, talks, discussions, masterclasses and cultural routes, inviting residents to immerse themselves in the cultural life of their neighbourhoods.

ESCENA is an established circuit that brings live music and performing arts to every district of Barcelona, with two editions each year and a selection of artists and companies from among hundreds of proposals received.
