Barcelona will change completely this Friday: the streets and transport affected by La Diada

The disruptions will not be limited to the afternoon. TMB expects bus diversions from 5:00 because of events beside the Rafael Casanova monument, while the biggest disruptions will be concentrated between approximately 13:00 and 21:00 because of the two demonstration columns.

The main mobilisation will begin at 17:14 with two columns. The one called Present will leave the junction of Gran Via and Casanova, continue towards Plaça Universitat and follow Ronda de la Universitat to Plaça Catalunya. The Futur column will depart from Via Laietana, beside Plaça de la Catedral, and reach the same finishing point via Ronda de Sant Pere. The call takes place simultaneously in Barcelona, Girona and Amposta.

Mobility disruptions will start before the marches set off. Some metropolitan routes already have diversions announced from 13:00: the L95 will alter its route until approximately 21:00, and Aerobús A1 and A2 will temporarily stop using their usual Plaça Catalunya stops until around 22:00. It cannot be claimed, however, that the whole centre will be “inaccessible by car” for six hours: restrictions will be concentrated along the march routes and their surroundings.

TMB recommends travelling by metro and expects especially high numbers at Urgell, Universitat, Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia, Urquinaona and Jaume I. The current notice asks people to allow extra journey time and warns that regulation measures may be applied in the event of large gatherings. As things stand, I would not publish a specific figure for additional trains for the 2026 Diada: the current notice confirms the expected disruptions but does not yet set out a quantified reinforcement like that of other years.

The day will have another focal point a few minutes’ walk from Plaça Catalunya. From 10:00, Òmnium Cultural will install MerCAT on Passeig de Lluís Companys, with around a hundred organisations and businesses linked to language and culture. After the demonstration, the musical part of Festa per la Llibertat will begin: DJ Trapella will perform at 19:00 and La Gossa Sorda will take the stage at 21:30. The Valencian group, which resumed activity this year after a decade, will give its only announced free concert in Catalunya here. DJ K-ZU will close the programme from 23:45.

The Diada will also allow free entry to several buildings that normally cannot be visited in the same way. Parlament de Catalunya will open from 11:00 to 19:00 with no prior registration and will allow visitors to see spaces such as the chamber, the sala de la Mesa and several committee rooms. Palau de la Generalitat will open from 11:00 to 17:00, although in this case free advance booking is compulsory and the confirmation QR code is required.

There will also be free admission to Museu d’Història de Catalunya from 10:00 to 14:30, to Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya during the same period and to the Palau Robert exhibitions from 9:00 to 14:00. Palau Moja will also have guided visits at 10:30 and 12:00. For now, I would not include MNAC or Palau Güell in a definitive list of 2026 open days without specific confirmation from each venue.

The eve will also have institutional activity. Parlament will hold the solemn raising of the senyera on Thursday the 10th at 19:30 and the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, will deliver his Diada address at 21:00. On Friday morning, at 9:00, the traditional floral offering at the Rafael Casanova monument will take place before attention shifts to the cultural activities and the afternoon mobilisation.

To get around Barcelona on 11 September, the most sensitive points will be Gran Via at Casanova, Plaça Universitat, Ronda Universitat, Via Laietana, Ronda de Sant Pere and Plaça Catalunya. Anyone who only wants to attend the concerts will find Festa per la Llibertat on Passeig de Lluís Companys from the morning, with music from 19:00.
