Tuesday brought hail and storms to Barcelona and the weather will remain unsettled
Barcelona experienced a day this Tuesday marked by intense storms, hail and a sharp change in temperature that surprised many residents after Monday’s almost summery conditions. During the afternoon, several parts of the city and metropolitan area recorded heavy showers accompanied by small hailstorms that even turned some streets white for a few minutes.
The episode left a scene very different from the one usual in mid-May. The storms particularly affected Barcelona’s coast and pre-coastal area, causing occasional complications to mobility, slower traffic and improvised changes to many outdoor plans. The drop in temperature was already noticeable during the afternoon, when conditions quickly went from warm to much cooler.
For this Wednesday, forecasts point to another unsettled day, with very cloudy skies and the possibility of further showers during the afternoon, especially in counties near Barcelona and inland areas. Temperatures will continue to fall and will struggle to exceed 20 degrees in many parts of the city.
Thursday will bring a similar situation, with spells of rain and weather that is cool for the time of year. Meteorologists also warn that the temperature drop will be even more apparent between Friday and the weekend, when values more typical of late March or early April than the second half of May could be recorded.
In mountain areas, the change will be even more striking. The snow line could fall to 1,500 metres or even lower at some times, bringing snowfall to areas of the Pyrenees and Montseny, something very unusual at this point in spring.
The weather shift also comes in a week packed with cultural activities, terraces, concerts and outdoor events in Barcelona. The rain and colder conditions could particularly affect mobility and street life for several consecutive days, right in one of the periods when the city usually begins to operate at an almost summer-like pace.
Barcelona’s spring thus once again shows its most unpredictable side. In barely 48 hours, the city has gone from mild warmth and full terraces to hailstorms, jackets retrieved from the wardrobe and mountain snow forecasts, a contrast that perfectly defines the changing character of the Mediterranean climate at this time of year.
