Barcelona will have three opportunities to extend the break this autumn
The return from holidays arrives this year with several breathing spaces in Barcelona’s calendar. Between 11 September and 12 October, there will be two three-day weekends and the possibility of making a four-day break for La Mercè by taking only one Friday off.
The first date is marked in red on Friday 11 September, Diada Nacional de Catalunya. As it falls just before the weekend, those who work Monday to Friday will be able to link three consecutive days without using holiday entitlement.
The next break will arrive barely two weeks later. Thursday 24 September is a local public holiday in Barcelona for La Mercè, so those also able to take Friday 25 off will have four consecutive days, from Thursday to Sunday.
The date also coincides with the main days of Barcelona's major festival. La Mercè 2026 will run from 23 to 28 September, with concerts, popular culture and shows spread across different parts of the city. For those who stay, the long weekend can therefore become one of the weekends with the most activity in the streets before autumn fully sets in.
The third opportunity comes on Monday 12 October, Fiesta Nacional de España. Its position in the calendar guarantees another three-day weekend for many of those who work Monday to Friday, barely a month after the Diada break.
After that, it will be necessary to wait until December. Tuesday the 8th will be a public holiday for the Immaculate Conception, a date that makes it possible to create another long weekend if Monday the 7th is taken off. Christmas will fall on Friday, while Sant Esteve, a public holiday in Catalunya, will be on Saturday. By contrast, 6 December falls on a Sunday and does not appear as an additional public holiday in Catalunya's 2026 work calendar.
The calendar therefore leaves a fairly fragmented return to routine in Barcelona: a Friday off for the Diada, a Thursday for La Mercè and another public-holiday Monday in October. For getting away or simply staying in a city that still has an end-of-summer feel, the coming weeks offer several chances to close the laptop early.
