Barcelona will approach total darkness during the 12 August eclipse
On Wednesday 12 August, Barcelona will experience one of the most unusual sunsets of recent years. The Moon will cover around 99.7% of the solar disc, a partial eclipse so deep that it will drastically reduce light over the city shortly before sunset.
The phenomenon will begin at around 19:35 and reach its maximum at about 20:29. Although Barcelona lies slightly outside the path of totality, for a few moments only a narrow portion of the Sun will remain visible.
The City Council has provided specific information to prepare for the day and follow the eclipse safely. It will also extend the opening hours of Montjuïc Castle until 21:30, with last entry at 21:00, to take advantage of its elevated position and open views towards the horizon.
Those entering the fortress will receive approved glasses to observe the phenomenon. Conventional sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection, and looking directly at the star, even when it is almost completely covered, can cause serious eye injuries.
The castle terrace will also host a special activity explaining how an eclipse occurs and what will be visible from Barcelona. Places will be limited and prior booking will be required, so it will be advisable to organise the visit in advance.
The Sun's position will be one of the decisive factors. The maximum will arrive very close to the horizon, so buildings, trees or the mountain itself may block the view from some points. West-facing viewpoints and open spaces will offer better conditions.
Anticipation will also spread to beaches, rooftops and elevated parts of the city. Its coincidence with an August afternoon may draw many curious onlookers to Montjuïc and other panoramic points, so it will be advisable to plan journeys and avoid arriving at the last minute.
The scene will leave Barcelona with its gaze fixed on the sky and a light that will dim in an unusual way before nightfall. It will not be a total eclipse within the city, but the difference will be minimal and enough to transform the urban landscape completely for a few minutes.
