Barcelona gets ready for an explosive Chinese New Year 2026 with parades and surprises

Barcelona is already gearing up to celebrate Chinese New Year 2026, the most important festival for the local Chinese community. Associations such as Huaxing, the Barcelona Confucius Institute Foundation and Casa Asia are leading the organisation of an event which, like Christmas in the West, brings families and friends together around tradition and culture.

This year, the lunar calendar marks the beginning of the Year of the Fire Horse. The main celebrations will take place on Saturday 7 February, continuing until Sunday 8. However, Chinese New Year will officially begin on 17 February 2026.

The programme begins on Saturday 7 in the morning with the traditional gong ceremony and the start of the colourful parade through the Fort Pienc neighbourhood, from Parc de l’Estació del Nord to Arc de Triomf. Throughout the day, from 11 am to 9 pm, Arc de Triomf will host the Gastronomic and Cultural Fair, where visitors can sample typical dishes and learn more about Chinese culture.

Between 12 noon and 2 pm, the stage at Arc de Triomf will be the epicentre of traditional performances, which will continue in the afternoon, from 5 pm to 7 pm. On Sunday 8, the programme will repeat with more performances and the fair open all day.

The Chinese lunar calendar determines the date of this celebration, which changes every year. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese calendar consists of months of 29 and 30 days, adding up to 354 days a year. The new year is set after the second new moon following the winter solstice.

In Chinese astrology, the horse symbolises freedom, vitality and an independent spirit. The fire element intensifies these qualities, heralding a year full of energy, creativity and both personal and collective change.
