Barcelona reaches 35 degrees in the middle of a heatwave this Wednesday
Barcelona experiences one of the week's most stifling days this Wednesday. The heat is already noticeable from early morning, and forecasts point to highs of up to 35 degrees in the city, with a yellow warning for high temperatures on Barcelona's coast.
The early hours have once again been very warm, with lows around 27 degrees, leaving little room for homes and streets to cool down. Even before mid-morning, the muggy feeling is already affecting journeys, terraces, queues on public transport and any plan involving walking.
The garbí wind will be one of the day’s main features. Its arrival can push dry, reheated air towards the city, sending the thermometer soaring within a few hours and making the heat feel more abrupt, especially in dense neighbourhoods, avenues with little tree cover and areas highly exposed to asphalt.
AEMET is keeping the yellow warning active on Barcelona’s coast until 20:00, with maximum temperatures that may reach 36 degrees. In the pre-coastal area, the episode will be even more intense and some places may approach or exceed 40 degrees, during a day marked by warm air across much of Catalonia.
The sky will generally remain clear, although high clouds and an occasional local storm may appear in the afternoon. This is not expected to clearly ease temperatures in Barcelona, where the problem will be the combination of accumulated heat, humidity and a night that will once again be difficult.
The recommendation is to adapt the day to the thermometer: avoid exertion between midday and the afternoon, drink water frequently, seek shade and pay attention to older people, very young children, outdoor workers and neighbours who live alone. Climate refuges and air-conditioned spaces are again a useful option.
Thursday should bring a first respite, although it will not be a radical change. The maximum will fall to around 33 degrees and the minimum will remain close to 26, so the heat will continue, albeit with less intensity than this Wednesday.
The scene gives a very clear picture of Barcelona’s current summer: heat no longer appears merely as an occasional nuisance, but as a factor that organises schedules, mobility, rest and health. This Wednesday, the city once again moves to the rhythm of the sun, the garbí and the constant search for shade.
