Two marches will cross central Barcelona during the Diada on 11 September
Barcelona will have a Diada demonstration this Friday, 11 September, with two simultaneous routes through the city centre. The two columns will begin at 17:14 and end in plaça Catalunya, crossing some of the main mobility corridors of Eixample and Ciutat Vella.
The mobilisation, under the slogan “Hi soc. Hi som. Independència”, is jointly promoted by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana, Òmnium Cultural, the Consell de la República, the Associació de Municipis per la Independència, the Intersindical and CIEMEN. The format will again be decentralised, with demonstrations also taking place in Girona and Amposta.
In Barcelona, the so-called Columna Present will begin at the junction of Gran Via and Casanova. From there it will proceed towards plaça Universitat, travel along ronda Universitat and finally reach plaça Catalunya. The organisers identify Urgell, on metro line L1, as the reference station for reaching the starting point.
The second march, called Columna Futur, will set off simultaneously from Via Laietana next to plaça de la Catedral. It will then continue along ronda Sant Pere until it meets the first column in plaça Catalunya. For this route, the station recommended by the organisers is Jaume I, on the L4.
The route makes it possible to anticipate significant disruption to private traffic and bus lines using Gran Via, Via Laietana, ronda Universitat, ronda Sant Pere and the area around plaça Catalunya while the demonstration progresses. However, as of 7 September, TMB had still not published the specific diversion and recommendation arrangements for the 2026 Diada, so it is not yet possible to specify which lines will change their routes or during which time slots.
The metro will predictably be the most reliable alternative for getting close to the city centre, although it may also experience heavy footfall before and after 17:14. The organisers themselves recommend using Urgell for the Gran Via column and Jaume I for the Via Laietana column.
The day will have activity well before the marches begin. From 10:00, Òmnium will hold the Festa per la Llibertat on the Lluís Companys promenade, where there will be a market with around a hundred organisations and businesses. The political event is scheduled for 12:00 and, after the demonstration, DJ Trapella, La Gossa Sorda and DJ K-ZU will perform from 19:00.
Barcelona will not be the only point of mobilisation this year. Girona and Amposta complete the Diada's territorial format. In Amposta, for example, there will also be two columns converging on the suspension bridge, leaving at 16:30 and 16:50.
For those planning to travel through central Barcelona on Friday afternoon, the points to keep especially in mind are Gran Via between Casanova and Universitat, Via Laietana next to the Cathedral, ronda Universitat and ronda Sant Pere, and plaça Catalunya. Specific bus diversions and any additional restrictions will need to be confirmed when TMB and the City Council publish the final arrangements.
