Barcelona faces days of intense heat before the weekend peak
Barcelona looks at the thermometer again with little patience. Heat will continue gaining ground this Wednesday 17 June, with a sunny day, heavy conditions and temperatures that will barely give relief at night. The worst of the episode could arrive between the weekend and the start of next week.
The feeling of summer will be evident from the first hours of the day. The early morning will already bring high readings across much of the city, especially in neighbourhoods closest to the sea and in dense areas where asphalt retains heat for longer.
As the morning progresses, the sky will remain clear and temperatures will rise quickly. Midday will be the most uncomfortable period for walking, exercising or moving around areas without shade, while in the afternoon humidity may increase the feeling of mugginess.
Highs could rise by a couple of degrees compared with Tuesday. It will not yet be the most extreme point of the episode, but it will be a hot enough day to adjust schedules, avoid exertion during the central hours and take water if spending time outside.
The night will not bring much relief either. Barcelona will string together another tropical night, with temperatures not falling below 20 degrees in many neighbourhoods. This type of night makes rest difficult, especially in poorly ventilated homes or those without air conditioning.
The sky will continue to be dominated by sunshine, although some banks of low cloud may appear on the coast, especially towards Alt Maresme. In Barcelona they will be more occasional, but coastal intervals could appear on Thursday and, later, high and medium cloud that will leave a whiter sky.
The end of the week will be marked by warm air of Saharan origin and airborne dust, driven by a disturbance located near the Azores. A scattered shower is not ruled out on Friday, although it would be of little significance and would not break the general heat pattern.
The episode arrives just before the summer solstice and is a reminder that heat in Barcelona no longer affects only beaches or terraces. It also shapes sleep, public-transport journeys, outdoor work and daily life in neighbourhoods where finding shade or a cool space can make all the difference.
