An exhibition arrives in Barcelona revealing how Matisse changed painting
Barcelona hosts the exhibition Chez Matisse. The legacy of a new painting at CaixaForum Barcelona until 16 August. The exhibition brings together more than 40 works by Henri Matisse alongside pieces by other great artists, in a journey that explores how he transformed modern painting.
The project, in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, presents almost a hundred works. Matisse’s pieces engage in dialogue with creators such as Pablo Picasso, Braque and Sonia Delaunay, creating an artistic exchange that connects different generations.
One of the major attractions is La Moulade, a key work from the beginning of Fauvism that is being exhibited in Barcelona for the first time. The exhibition is organised into eight sections tracing the artist’s evolution, from his beginnings to his most luminous period.
The route also includes a section dedicated to the female figure and a final space focused on his final years, featuring highlights such as the prints from the Jazz series. Here, colour and collage become the protagonists of a new form of creation.
The proposal also includes a participatory space where visitors can experiment with techniques inspired by Matisse, extending the experience beyond contemplation.
In a city with an increasingly active cultural agenda, this exhibition has become one of the season’s standout plans. It combines art, history and experience in an accessible format that invites visitors both to discover and to rediscover the role of colour in the contemporary gaze.
