Barcelona celebrates the Tour de France with events and road closures
Barcelona is entering an unusual week with the arrival of the Grand Départ del Tour de France. The city will not only host the start of one of the world's most important sporting events, but will also fill neighbourhoods, markets, sports centres and cultural spaces with cycling-related activities.

The programme will run from 25 June to 9 July, with offerings designed for very different audiences. There will be gastronomy, exhibitions, routes, workshops, sporting sessions, family activities and spaces to follow the atmosphere of the Tour without having to be beside the circuit.
One of the most visible initiatives will be the Tapeo Tour, with bars and restaurants joining the celebration through special gastronomic offerings. The idea is for the Tour to be experienced from the table as well, with venues in different neighbourhoods using the event’s pull to attract residents and visitors.
Municipal markets will also take part in the programme, alongside spaces such as CASA CUPRA Raval, which will host cultural and gastronomic activities. The aim is for the arrival of the Tour not to be limited to the competition days, but to spread across the city for almost two weeks.
The exhibition “Bicycle and Society”, at City Hall, will offer a broader look at the role of the bicycle in urban life. It is not only about professional sport: bicycles also speak to mobility, health, public space and new ways of getting around Barcelona.
Municipal sports centres will join in with cycling sessions and offerings linked to effort, endurance and the atmosphere of racing. There will also be activities in neighbourhoods such as Nou Barris, at Sant Joan de Déu, at the Filmoteca and in parks such as Tres Xemeneies, with workshops, cultural routes and experiences designed to bring the Tour closer to audiences who may not follow cycling during the rest of the year.
The Fan Park del Passeig Lluís Companys will be one of the main meeting points between 2 and 5 July. Located near the Arc de Triomf, it will bring together interactive activities, rest areas and offerings for families, fans and curious visitors who want to experience the cycling atmosphere without leaving a central location.
The sporting programme will have its strongest moment on Saturday 4 July, with the team time trial. The stage will start at Parc del Fòrum and finish at Passeig Olímpic, passing through key points of the city and taking the cycling spectacle to major avenues and areas of Montjuïc.
On Sunday 5 July, Barcelona will once again take centre stage with the arrival of the second stage. The cyclists will enter the city and face a circuit in Montjuïc, an area that for several hours will be heavily affected by the race, the teams, the organisation and the presence of spectators.
The celebration, however, will have a clear cost for mobility. On 2 July, the team presentation will affect Avinguda de Gaudí and the surroundings of the Sagrada Família from 14:00, with restrictions for vehicles and difficulties accessing private car parks.
On Saturday 4, the closures will be much more extensive. Major roads such as Aragó, Mallorca and Passeig de Gràcia will face restrictions from 13:30, and there will also be disruptions on the Ronda Litoral. On Sunday 5, Montjuïc will be the most sensitive point, with restrictions from 12:00 and especially intense closures during the arrival of the stage.
City Hall will provide more than 50 regulated crossing points to make it easier to cross on foot and will reduce the impact wherever possible. Even so, travelling by car through the affected areas can become a bad idea during the middle hours of each day.
The metro will be the most advisable option. Service will be increased by up to 40%, although on 2 July the L2 will not stop at Sagrada Família from midday. Several bus lines will alter their routes or be temporarily out of service, and around twenty Bicing stations will be closed near the circuits.
Barcelona will experience the Tour as an international showcase, but also as an everyday challenge. To enjoy it without getting trapped by closures, it is advisable to check the programme, review journeys and choose the right time to travel. The city will fill with bicycles, screens, activities and visitors; the key will be deciding when to join the celebration and when to let the peloton pass.
