Barcelona adds a new 20-storey tower next to Sants and redefines its skyline
A new 20-storey skyscraper will transform the southern entrance to Barcelona. The project includes a public square and two additional buildings. The initiative aims to complete the urban symmetry of Carrer Tarragona and revitalise a forgotten plot.
Barcelona's urban transformation marks a new milestone: a 20-storey tower next to Estación de Sants, set to redefine the entrance from Plaza España. The project, which has received initial approval, will reactivate a block bordered by Tarragona, Béjar, Sant Nicolau y Consell de Cent, which has been at a standstill since 1987.
The developer Núñez i Navarro will build a steel and glass building on a 900 m² plot, accompanied by two other blocks of four and seven storeys. The plan covers more than 6,000 m² and includes an open public square and space for facilities.
The design is intended to complement the Allianz tower, creating a more monumental southern entrance and reviving Pasqual Maragall's vision of turning Tarragona street into a grand avenue welcoming people to the city.
The project is currently on public display and, if it passes the necessary procedures, could receive final approval in the coming months, reclaiming a key piece of unfinished urban planning.
This intervention strengthens Barcelona's evolution as a metropolis and improves a strategic access point, creating new public spaces and opportunities that will have a direct impact on the daily lives of local residents.
