The Can Cuiàs aqueduct will be a pedestrian crossing linking two neighbourhoods
Barcelona launches a project that could change daily journeys in the north of the city. The Can Cuiàs aqueduct will become a pedestrian route directly linking Ciutat Meridiana with Can Cuiàs, resolving a crossing that until now has been awkward and poorly accessible.
The project is already under way and will last five months. With an investment of more than €2 million, Barcelona City Council seeks to transform a historic infrastructure into a useful space for everyday life.
The change will be particularly noticeable in mobility. Slopes and the lack of access forced long detours, but the new footbridge will make it possible to cross directly and safely. For many residents, this means less travelling time and greater ease in moving between neighbourhoods.
The intervention does not stop at the crossing. The surroundings will be renewed with lighting and resting areas intended for everyday use. The idea is for the space to be not only a passage point, but also a place to stay and generate activity.
At the same time, the historical value is maintained. The aqueduct, built in the 19th century, will continue to preserve its structure and its hydraulic function in the upper part. The intervention seeks to balance current use and heritage.
This type of project redefines how peripheral neighbourhoods are connected. When walking is made easier and spaces are activated, the city becomes closer and more liveable, especially in areas where every connection counts.
