Barcelona's Gran Via is entering a new stage of urban transformation. The City Council has announced the remodelling of the stretch between Castillejos and Padilla streets, an area that had remained temporary following the works at Glòries and the tunnels.
At present, the pavements on both sides have temporary surfacing and construction barriers. The municipal intervention provides for pavements to be widened to six metres, more trees to be planted and the carriageway to be reorganised. Motor traffic will have an exclusive bus and taxi lane on the mountain side, while both sides will have two-metre-wide one-way cycle lanes.
The aim is to improve the quality of public space and consolidate the final urban development of this stretch, affected by the recent works at Glòries. The project will be carried out in two phases: the first, lasting six and a half months, focused on pavements and services; the second, lasting two months, will complete the pedestrian routes and the carriageway next to the tunnel wall.
The total investment amounts to 2.6 million euros. In addition, the plan includes the demolition of buildings on three blocks of Consell de Cent street, between Castillejos and Independència, to free up nine hectares for neighbourhood use. The City Council plans to complete these demolitions in May.
