Barcelona transforms Les Roquetes Square to combat extreme heat

Les Roquetes square, in Nou Barris, is preparing for a comprehensive transformation. Barcelona City Council starts refurbishment work this Monday with a budget of 1.94 million euros and an expected duration of nine months. The aim: to adapt this central neighbourhood space to increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves due to climate change.

The project, framed within the Pla de Barris, includes the creation of new shaded areas, improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility and the installation of renewed street furniture, such as benches, chairs and litter bins. In addition, the children’s play area will be expanded, keeping the centre of the square clear and enhancing the covered area for younger children.

Among the new features is the construction of a new pergola in the southern section, which will join the two already in place. The refurbishment will also address structural problems: leaks affecting the underground car park will be corrected, gradients adjusted, drainage redesigned, and dampness and paving repaired.

The City Council stresses that the square is a nerve centre of community life in Les Roquetes and a privileged viewpoint towards the sea. With this intervention, the space aims to become a more welcoming and spectacular place for the neighbourhood’s residents.
