Barcelona will take architecture models to shop windows in its neighbourhoods
For one week, Barcelona will turn shop and business windows into small exhibition halls. The Aparadors d’arquitectura initiative will bring models from studios and professionals to different neighbourhoods to bring urban design closer to everyday life.
The proposal will coincide with World Architecture Day and will be open to any establishment with a shop window visible from the street. Shops must have sufficient space, guarantee good lighting and take care of the pieces for the duration of the exhibition.
Architecture studios and professionals may lend one or more models. Each will be accompanied by an explanatory postcard enabling visitors to learn about the project, its authorship and the ideas behind the displayed piece.
The Technical Office of Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture will be responsible for matching shops and models. To do so, it will take into account the available size, the proximity between the studio and the shop, and the relationship between the project and the type of establishment.
Participating premises will receive a badge identifying the campaign, information materials and digital resources. They will also appear on an interactive map that will make it possible to organise routes and locate all the pieces spread throughout the city.
The call will remain open until 15 August for both shops and studios. Registration will take place through a form and will make it possible to be part of a collective exhibition distributed across streets, squares and shopping areas.
The initiative forms part of Barcelona 2026's programme as UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture and also has the collaboration of the European Capital of Local Commerce. The aim is to connect architects, shopkeepers and local residents through spaces that already form part of daily routines.
The scene will place models among clothing shop windows, bookshops, workshops and small businesses. For a few days, architecture will leave offices and specialist venues to mingle with strolling, shopping and neighbourhood life.
