Green light for the redevelopment of Sant Adrià y Otger: less traffic, more neighbourhood

The intervention proposes turning the area into a single-platform axis linking Fabra i Coats with Can Fabra square. Traffic will be restricted to residents and services, freeing space for pedestrians and creating new areas for walking and lingering.

The change does not start from zero. Since 2023, part of Sant Adrià had already been closed to traffic due to the temporary installation of Mercat de Sant Andreu, anticipating a model that will now be consolidated permanently. The new arrangement seeks to reinforce the connection between both sides of the road and make journeys more comfortable and safe.

The presence of facilities such as the library and intensive use by families make this transformation a key action for neighbourhood daily life. The project is expected to last about 15 months, during which green areas and meeting spaces will gradually be incorporated.

Beyond the works, the initiative is part of an urban strategy that seeks to reduce traffic and reinforce neighbourhood life in one of the city’s districts with the strongest identity.

Reducing traffic and creating pedestrian spaces usually translates into quieter, safer and more liveable streets. In the medium term, this may encourage local commerce, use of public spaces and greater social life in the area. It also entails changes in everyday mobility, with less through traffic and a greater role for walking or sustainable transport.
