Barcelona changes the venue for the Piromusical and New Year's Eve
This year, Barcelona will change two of its main festive venues. The Piromusical of La Mercè will move to Bogatell beach, and the New Year's Eve celebration will leave Maria Cristina avenue to take place at the Anella Olímpica de Montjuïc.
The reason lies in the redevelopment works at Fira de Barcelona, which affect the usual surroundings of Plaça Espanya and Avinguda Maria Cristina. That space, traditionally linked to the city’s major fireworks displays, will not be able to host large-scale shows normally while the works last.
The most symbolic change will be that of the Mercè Piromusical, which in 2026 will take place by the sea. Bogatell beach will replace the classic Montjuïc setting and offer a different image of the main festival, with the pyrotechnics reflected over the coast and a different distribution of the public.
La Mercè will be held between 23 and 27 September, with the 24th as its central day. Although the full programme is not yet finalised, the Piromusical will once again be one of the most anticipated moments, this time far from the fountains and the usual Maria Cristina perspective.
The New Year’s Eve celebration will also change location. The midnight chimes and New Year’s Eve show will move to the Olympic Ring, a space with capacity for large gatherings and experience in mass events, concerts and open-air celebrations.
For attendees, the move will require planning differently. Bogatell and the Olympic Ring have different access routes, itineraries and transport connections, so it will be key to follow municipal instructions, arrive with time to spare and check possible closures or additional transport services.
The change will also alter the visual experience of the celebrations. The Piromusical will gain an unusual maritime component, while New Year’s Eve will be experienced from one of the most recognisable spaces of Barcelona’s Olympic legacy, with Montjuïc as a backdrop.
The relocation leaves a clear image of a city adapting its major rituals to works and intensive use of public space. Barcelona keeps its festivities, but changes the map from which they are experienced: this year, La Mercè will look towards Bogatell and the turn of the year will be celebrated at the Olympic Ring.
