Night-time trade soars in Barcelona
Barcelona is experiencing an unprecedented expansion of supermarkets open 24 hours a day. In just six months, between July and December, 92 new establishments have opened, consolidating a consumption model that is already part of everyday life in the city.
Growth is steady: on average, a new establishment opens every two days. In total, Barcelona has added 643 supermarkets of this type since 2020, according to municipal data, reflecting a profound change in shopping habits.
The trend responds to growing demand for flexibility, especially among people who work irregular hours or seek to shop outside conventional opening times. However, it has also rekindled the debate about the impact on neighbourhood coexistence and residents' rest.
These shops are concentrated especially in areas with high density and nightlife, where activity extends beyond the daytime. Their presence has changed the character of many streets and neighbourhood dynamics.
The Town Council acknowledges the record pace of openings and is closely monitoring the evolution of the phenomenon, which poses new challenges in regulation and oversight.
In a city where the pace does not stop, 24-hour supermarkets reflect a broader transformation: the adaptation of commerce to an increasingly flexible and continuous urban life.
