Protests in Barcelona against the education agreement with the Generalitat
Barcelona has experienced a day of major demonstrations, with thousands of teachers and education staff in the streets. The protest caused closures on key arteries such as Meridiana, Gran Via and Diagonal, disrupting mobility across much of the centre.
The march set off from Plaza de Tetuán and advanced to the Parlament de Catalunya, crossing Ciutadella Park. Families, early-years educators, activity leaders and centre staff joined along the route, broadening the reach of the demonstration.
The discontent centres on the agreement signed between the Generalitat and the CCOO and UGT unions, which some teachers consider insufficient despite the announced investment. Criticism points to a lack of consensus and the feeling that the demands of the sector as a whole have not been taken on board.
In its final stretch, the protest coincided with a demonstration by healthcare workers called by Metges de Catalunya. The meeting between the two groups reinforced the protest mood, with shared messages about the need to prioritise investment in public education and healthcare.
