Barcelona promotes school sport with 17,570 grants and record investment

Barcelona is reinforcing its commitment to school sport during the 2025–2026 school year by awarding 17,570 grants for extracurricular sports activities. The Ayuntamiento, through the Institut Barcelona Esports (IBE), is allocating 4.6 million euros to make it easier for children to take part in physical activities outside school hours.

The main aim is to promote healthy habits from childhood and ensure that sporting activity is accessible, inclusive and of good quality. Nou Barris is the district with the most grants awarded, with 3,779 awards. It is followed by Sant Martí (2,788), Horta-Guinardó (2,282), Sant Andreu (2,201), Sants-Montjuïc (1,975) and Ciutat Vella (1,746). In Eixample, 1,337 grants have been awarded, in Gràcia 793, in Les Corts 337 and in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi 290.

The grants are aimed at families with children aged between 6 and 17 with limited financial resources. From the IBE, the Sports Councillor, David Escudé, stresses that the purpose is to ensure that all children can enjoy sport, since physical activity contributes to health, integration and values education.

The offer of extracurricular activities is possible thanks to the collaboration of 343 approved organisations, a number that continues to grow.
