Bicimad arrives in Pozuelo and changes mobility in western Madrid
Bicimad has already crossed Madrid’s boundary and reached Pozuelo de Alarcón. The public electric bicycle system is launching 30 stations and 370 bicycles in the municipality, opening a new option for people who travel daily between the capital and its western surroundings.
The major new feature is total interoperability. Any user will be able to take a bicycle in Madrid and leave it in Pozuelo, or travel in the opposite direction, without additional procedures or penalties for changing municipality. The bicycle thus begins to function as a genuine metropolitan alternative, rather than merely an urban service within the capital.
The new stations have been distributed at strategic points in Pozuelo, near main avenues, transit areas, public spaces and connections with other means of transport. The aim is to make everyday journeys without a car easier, especially short trips or those combined with Cercanías, Metro Ligero or buses.
The investment amounts to 2.32 million euros and has been assumed by the Ayuntamiento de Pozuelo. Operational management will be handled by EMT Madrid, enabling the new rollout to be integrated into Bicimad’s usual operation and maintaining a similar experience for users.
The expansion comes after months of installing docking stations and coordination between the two councils. The agreement guarantees fleet maintenance, technical management and the administrative connection between two municipalities that share many daily journeys for work, study, shopping and leisure.
With Pozuelo, Bicimad reaches 683 stations and 8,385 bicycles. The growth coincides with a period of heavy use of the service: almost 14 million journeys were recorded in 2025, and the trend points to new record figures if expansion towards outlying areas and neighbouring municipalities continues.
For people living in the western metropolitan area, the change may be noticeable in very specific journeys: reaching a station, avoiding a stretch by car, connecting with public transport or completing last-mile travel. It does not replace every journey, but it does add flexibility in an area where dependence on private vehicles remains high.
Bicimad’s arrival in Pozuelo leaves a clear picture of the mobility Madrid is seeking: more connected networks, fewer administrative boundaries and more options for getting around without a car. The electric bicycle ceases to be solely a resource for the centre and begins to gain ground in the metropolitan routine.
