Buitrago sells out its 3,000 places to experience the total eclipse
The 3,000 free tickets for Buitrago del Lozoya Eclipse Festival are already sold out. Huge interest in the 12 August astronomical phenomenon filled Riosequillo recreation area capacity just hours after bookings opened.
The gathering will be the main event organised in the Community of Madrid to follow the total solar eclipse. Throughout the day there will be science outreach, family workshops, children's games, music and a food area with food trucks.
Buitrago is in one of the areas of Madrid with the best conditions for observing the phenomenon. The eclipse will begin at around 19:30 and will reach its peak at around 20:32, when the Sun will already be very close to the horizon.
Observation must always be carried out with certified eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses, cameras without specific filters or homemade solutions do not offer sufficient protection and can cause serious damage to eyesight.
Those who have not yet obtained a ticket will have other options. The Community of Madrid is preparing 52 official observation points across the region, with specialists, outreach activities and information materials to follow the eclipse safely.
A total of 93 municipalities in Madrid lie within the band from which totality can be seen. The Sierra Norte will draw much of the attention, so a heavy influx of vehicles and visitors is expected during the afternoon.
The authorities are preparing additional public transport and special security and mobility arrangements. People are also asked to avoid improvised parking and to take extra precautions in natural areas, as the event coincides with a time of high fire risk.
The most eagerly awaited scene will arrive at sunset, when the light fades over the mountains in a few minutes and the landscape is temporarily left in semi-darkness. Buitrago has already filled its festival, but the eclipse can be followed from dozens of municipalities without concentrating all the visitors in a single place.
